More about this case

The Casa Pia scandal is one of the largest child protection affairs in Portuguese history. Casa Pia de Lisboa is a state care institution for vulnerable children with a history dating back to 1780. From the 1970s onward, systematic sexual abuse occurred within parts of the institution, with minors being offered to external individuals — partly facilitated by driver Carlos Silvino ('Bibi'). Journalist Felícia Cabrita published the exposé article in Expresso on 23 November 2002 that initiated the investigation. The trial ran from 2004 to 2010. Seven suspects were convicted to sentences of 5 to 18 years: Carlos Silvino, Manuel Abrantes, Jorge Ritto, João Ferreira Diniz, Hugo Marçal, Carlos Cruz, and Gertrudes Nunes. The scandal had major political impact and led to increased attention to child protection in Portugal and restructuring of Casa Pia itself.

Cross-case network: overlap between Casa Pia witnesses and other Portuguese cases

Several Casa Pia witness names also appear in the Rui Pedro file. Cross-referencing suggests a Lisbon-based network of service providers around vulnerable minors — largely overlapping with social-service organisations.
