More about this case
Joana Cipriano disappeared on the evening of 12 September 2004 after being sent by her mother to a local shop. The investigation was led by PJ Portimão under chief inspector Gonçalo Amaral. Both Leonor Cipriano (mother) and her brother João Cipriano were arrested within days. Both initially confessed and were convicted in 2005 to 16 and 20 years respectively. Leonor Cipriano recanted her confession and stated during PJ interrogation that she had been mistreated. Photographs of her with bruises became public. In 2009, Amaral and three other PJ officers were convicted of document falsification in connection with the circumstances of the arrests. Joana's body has never been recovered. The convictions rest primarily on the (later recanted) confessions.
